A Tennessee-born photographer, painter, and mixed-media artist, now creating on the shores of South Carolina.
Christine Patterson grew up in the hills of Tennessee. Her early years were spent on her mother's horse farm, developing a deep connection to both horses and nature. In her twenties, she was introduced to photography as a way to chronicle her daily life on the farm.
That passion grew into an insatiable quest to bring her images alive, experimenting in the darkroom with unconventional ways of photographing. Her love of infrared black and white film brought a new language to her work, veiling her subjects and layering images to tell a story of mystery and nostalgia.
The next thirty plus years were devoted to learning everything she could, through research and workshops with prestigious photographers, and to becoming a full time artist. She has shown in numerous galleries, been featured in many magazines, published two books, became Tennessee's Bicentennial Photographer, and has been collected worldwide, held in corporate institutions, museums, and private collections. Along the way she earned a reputation as an alternative and mixed-media, photo-impressionistic fine artist.
In 2017, Christine and her family moved to the shores of South Carolina. The move reignited a longtime love of painting, sparked by the color and energy of the coast. During the pandemic she set her fine art photography aside and dove fully into painting, enrolling in a prestigious online school. As in her early photography years, she has become immersed in the painting and drawing world, and continues her education today.
She stays deeply engaged both online and within her community. She runs a photography and art business from her home and keeps a painting studio at Redux Contemporary Art Center in Charleston, where she works as a private art coach and teaches creative workshops.
